BYD and DJI have unveiled an innovative drone system that integrates directly into a car’s roof, bringing a futuristic new feature to the Chinese automotive market. Designed for on-the-go aerial filming, this technology allows drivers and passengers to capture real-time footage while traveling. The system, known as “Lingyuan” (Spirit Kite), is priced at ¥16,000 CNY (approximately $2,200 USD) and is currently available in China.

Housed within a sleek, 30 cm-square compartment on the roof, the drone station opens with a touchscreen command, revealing a launch pad capable of deploying the drone while the vehicle is moving. The system functions at speeds of up to 15 mph, enabling smooth takeoff, aerial tracking, and automatic docking. The drone transmits live footage to the car’s central display, offering a unique way to document road trips.
This technology debuts on the Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, an off-road SUV starting at 395,800 yuan ($54,330 USD). BYD plans to expand compatibility to other models, including the Yangwang U8, Bao 5, Titanium 3, Denza N9, Tang L, and Sealion 07 DM-i.
The drone system is equipped with three positioning sensors for precise landing and dynamic operation at speeds up to 25 km/h. The drone can follow the vehicle at a maximum speed of 54 km/h and automatically returns to the station for charging within a 2 km range. It takes 30 minutes to recharge from 20% to 80%.

Beyond aerial tracking, the drone features AI-powered controls and built-in image and music editing software, all managed through the Lingyuan app. According to BYD, this feature is designed to enhance driving enjoyment and create professional-quality travel content effortlessly.
As BYD continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation, this drone system sets a new standard for in-car entertainment and exploration.
