Huawei has introduced the Pura X, a foldable smartphone that challenges conventional designs. Unlike traditional flip phones that fold vertically or foldables that expand into tablets, the Pura X takes a different approach by folding sideways, delivering a fresh experience for users.

When closed, the Pura X features a compact 3.5-inch cover display with a 980 x 980 resolution. Unfolding it reveals a 6.3-inch OLED screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it well-suited for gaming, browsing, and watching videos. Unlike standard flip phones that open upward, this device unfolds horizontally, creating a more immersive widescreen format.

On the camera front, Huawei has equipped the Pura X with a 50MP main sensor, a 40MP ultrawide lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom. A 10.7MP front-facing camera is built into the punch-hole display, designed for high-quality video calls when the phone is unfolded. The device also features a spectral image sensor, first seen in Huawei’s Mate 70 Pro series.

Running on HarmonyOS 5.0, the Pura X is powered by an undisclosed chipset, as Huawei continues to withhold details about its processors. It supports up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, ensuring strong performance and plenty of space for users. The 4,720 mAh battery is divided into two cells, offering 66W wired fast charging and 40W wireless charging.

Huawei built the Pura X with durability in mind, using a space-grade teardrop hinge with a 1900 MPa strength rating. The device is IPX8-rated for water resistance and features satellite connectivity, though this function is limited to specific models and only compatible with Chinese satellites.

Available exclusively in China, the Huawei Pura X starts at 7,499 CNY (around $1,037) for the base model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. A premium Collector’s Edition, featuring unique panel designs and 16GB RAM, is also available. However, like other recent Huawei smartphones, the Pura X will not be released in the US.
