OpenAI is making ChatGPT’s voice assistant feel more like a real conversation. A new update to Advanced Voice Mode allows users to pause without being interrupted, creating a smoother, more natural dialogue experience.
The update, announced by OpenAI researcher Manuka Stratta in a video on Monday, aims to fix a common frustration—AI assistants cutting off users when they pause to think or take a breath. Now, free ChatGPT users will notice fewer interruptions, while paying subscribers on Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro plans will also benefit from an enhanced, more engaging AI personality.
An OpenAI spokesperson shared that the improved AI voice assistant is now more direct, creative, and specific in its responses, making interactions feel less robotic and more human-like.
This update comes as competition in the AI voice assistant space heats up. Sesame, a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz, recently gained attention with its ultra-realistic AI voices, Maya and Miles. Meanwhile, Amazon is preparing to launch a next-gen Alexa powered by large language models to rival OpenAI’s advancements.
As the race to build the most natural AI voice assistant continues, OpenAI’s latest improvements aim to keep ChatGPT ahead of the curve.
