Qualcomm has expanded its AI capabilities by acquiring the generative AI division of VinAI, a leading AI research company based in Hanoi, Vietnam. The deal, announced on Monday, strengthens Qualcomm’s position in the AI tools market, though the financial details were not disclosed.

VinAI, founded by former DeepMind scientist Hung Bui in 2019, specializes in AI technologies such as computer vision and language models. The company has created innovative AI products, particularly for the automotive industry, including in-cabin monitoring, security, and smart parking systems.
According to Jilei Hou, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President of Engineering, this acquisition highlights Qualcomm’s focus on advancing AI research and development. By integrating VinAI’s skilled team, Qualcomm aims to enhance its ability to provide cutting-edge AI solutions across various industries.
VinAI’s expertise is expected to complement Qualcomm’s existing technology, particularly in smartphones, PCs, and automotive systems. Bui, who serves as VinAI’s CEO, is excited about the opportunity to help drive forward Qualcomm’s AI and machine learning capabilities.
This acquisition is Qualcomm’s second of the year, following its purchase of Edge Impulse, a German AI and IoT company, in March. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, has highlighted the potential of edge AI, which runs directly on devices, as a key growth area for the company.
Following the acquisition, Bui will join Qualcomm, further boosting its AI initiatives and helping the company to continue leading in innovative technologies.
